Importance of Removing Your Wisdom Teeth
The average adult has 32 teeth by the age of eighteen, with 16 teeth on top and 16 teeth on the bottom. Wisdom teeth, often referred to as third molars, are the last teeth at the back of your mouth. Wisdom teeth do not need to be removed if they are properly aligned and your gum tissue is healthy. Regrettably, this does not always occur.
Only 28 teeth are designed to fit in the normal mouth. When 32 teeth try to fit into a mouth that only has 28 teeth, it can be uncomfortable. This is why, in many circumstances, wisdom teeth extraction is necessary.
When your wisdom teeth are preventing correct erupting within the mouth, wisdom tooth extraction is required. They can develop sideways, partially protrude from the gums, or become stuck (impacted) beneath the gums and bone. As they search for a path that would allow them to erupt properly, impacted teeth may occupy a variety of positions in the bone.
The majority of people are encouraged to have their wisdom teeth extracted as soon as possible since this will assist to avoid the difficulties that come with impacted wisdom teeth, such as:
- Bacteria and plaque build-up
- Development of cysts
- Tumour development, infection and jaw and gum disease
- Crowding of the mouth and pushing straight teeth out of alignment
