Oral sedation, often known as “relaxed dentistry,” will put you in a thoroughly relaxed and comfortable state throughout your dental treatment while keeping you awake. It’s for people who are terrified of dentists or have a poor pain threshold. It also depends on the procedure that you are having performed. Sedation dentistry can be utilized for short appointments like cleanings and inspections all the way up to longer visits like restorative or surgical care.
You may consider sedation if any of the following apply to you:
- Mild, moderate or severe dental anxiety/phobia
- Resistant to local anesthesia (freezing)
- Hypersensitive gag reflex
- You require complex dental treatment
- Busy schedule (time constraints)
- You tend to experience heightened sensitivity following most dental visits
How Oral Sedation Works
You simply take a tablet before your visit and then sit back and relax while we do it. You will need someone to drive you to and from your appointment. It’s generally a good idea to have someone stay with you until the oral sedative wears off completely.
